Welcome to

LIC Youth Rugby

– Be a play maker, not a try scorer.

Welcome to the fastest growing sport in the nation. Our aim is to create team players who know how to respect themselves, their team mates as well as their opponent. We play co-ed, non-contact, flag rugby on Sunday morning at LIC Landing (Oval Park), 9:00 to 10:30AM. And, for more advanced player, we have a pre-tackle training program directly after flag from 10:30 to 11:30AM. We usually play a five game season in the spring and a five game season in the fall. We play our games anywhere from Manhattan to Pelham (Westchester) to Long Island (Northport) and Morris NJ.

Have the right attitude, because you will fail again and again. But, if you are having fun while you are failing, your lessons are much easier to learn. No rugby experience is required. We divide our practices into drill and scrimmages. Don’t worry about feeling lost. It takes everyone a while to learn how to pass backwards while running forward and to not be off sides on defense.

– Never give up on yourself, never give up on your team and never give up on the play.

Run forward. Break the line. Look for your support. Make eye contact with your target. Stay in support. Run with your hands up. Play the whistle. The whole idea is to learn the game. We will work with you on technique and position. Have patience, we all started out in the same place.

We are just beginning to grow our tackle program. Cleats, mouthpiece, and rugby jersey are required. This is the beginning of tackle. There will be bumps and bruises. Safety first. Only players with the right attitude and general rugby knowledge will be allowed to participate. We start off with some physical contact drills, one on one tackle drills and move in the break down and ruck situations. The group we have is learning quickly and plans for a tackle scrimmage are in the works.

– It’s what you do when no one is looking that counts.

We practice at LIC Landing (Oval Park), 9:00AM to 10:30AM on Sunday Mornings for flag, and 10:30 to 11:30 for tackle.

Our closest train stop is the 7 train, Vernon/Jackson stop. It’s the first stop in Queens from Grand Central. You can also take the Ferry to LIC Landing. The Ferry pulls right up to the pitch.

Bring layers in the winter, and water in every season. Dropping kids off is fine. We are not baby sitters. If your daughter or son is big enough to walk home by them self then great. But we don’t want kids left after practice anxiously waiting for their parents.

– It’s what you do when no one is looking that counts.
